They plomped out of the milkman's bag and continued rolling. "They" looked like two furry miniature bear cubs. One grey, one brown. Thankfully, other than for the generous amount of fur, they did not take up after their mother. She was a pomeranian- a noisy, ill tempered one, which belonged to the milkman.
At that point in time, Po did not like dogs with pink noses, so she chose Neo, the brown pup with the black nose.
His name wasn't Neo at the time. Po's mum named him that later on after Keanu Reeve's character in the Matrix. You may wonder why. But certain things in life shouldn't be questioned. Because if you ask why? to these things, your only answer would be why not? and no amount of rephrasing the question will give you a better answer. So you resign to the lack of subtlety, taste or sense that the world around you exhibits.
Neo had no qualms parting from his sister. Because the very next second he was welcomed into a cushiony lap and a salty finger to nibble at.
As Neo grew up, he realised that not all human beings are the same. Some didn't like it when he planted himself between their feet, some didn't like it when he licked them and some didn't even like to pat him..which was very sad, because these were some of his favourite things. But it was okay cos' Ma never minded and Po even less so.
The monsoons came along with July and Neo turned one. And with that came a spirit of adventure. Unlike other dogs, Neo enjoyed the sight of dark clouds and the drama of thunder and rain. And he had never had so much fun out there in the fields and the tall grass, than now, wallowing in the mud, chasing after frogs.
One evening, he got so carried away that he stayed out all night and saw Ma and Po only the next morning. He felt something was wrong because Po was up earlier than usual and she was whispering in a strange way to him. But when Ma came out, he knew she was furious and that meant he was in trouble. So even though he wasn't sure what he had done wrong, he stooped and lowered his head, pulled back his ears and put his still wagging tail between his legs and whimpered a little.
He was punished to two days in his kennel so that he would not repeat the mistake.
On the first day, he howled all day long. But on the next day he just laid around miserably and listened to the frogs croak. Some even leapt past his cage.
Evening came with clouds and thunder; despite this, seeing his sorry state, Ma and Po decided to let him free after dinner; but as soon as the kennel was opened, he whisked past them without touching his food.
Next day, Po woke up early once again. She knew there was something amiss and realised what it was when she saw Ma's face.
One of the electric cables near the milkman's cottage had come undone during the wind and rain. Neo had stepped on a loose wire. The milkman was saved from doing the same because he had caught sight of the dead dog.
Sometimes it would come back to Po and upset her. Sometimes she wondered why?
But certain things in life shouldn't be questioned. Because if you ask why? of these things, your only answer will be why not? And no amount of rephrasing will get you a better answer.
