She rapped at the door again. Gently as always. Sometimes you heard a sniffle. Sometimes, through the slit of space beneath the door, you saw her small feet shift the weight from one to the other. You turned to him and asked if you couldn't let her in, such a helpless seeming creature, can't we let her in boy? But he was dead sure, like you have been dead sure of the people you've kept waiting outside the door. He hugged you tighter, pulling you away from whatever it was that was out there, and you went with it, stayed with him, in his safety net.
