1. Landed in Dublin with new year text wishes from JYs and Mike's fam.
2. Got an immigration official who seemed equally disconcerted by the fact that we were spending 10 days in Dublin and by the fact that we had no plans at all for what we wanted to check out.
3. Got into a taxi with a fluffy, old grandpa for a driver who seemed straight out of a Hallmark movie, but had surprising vigor--mental (chatted on in a straightforward fashion while being thoroughly polite) and physical (wasted no time picking up my suitcase and putting it in the trunk).
4. Checked into hotel at 4 or 5am. Found ourselves in a tiny room with no desks, narrow twin beds, and questionable ac, but which blacks out very well once the lights are switched off.
5. Woke up at three in the afternoon.
6. Grabbed bar soap, milk and mineral water from Tesco opposite to the hotel and stood in a long line (no other supermarkets were open) that moved along quickly.
7. Ate at a Lebanese restaurant. Menu said shawarma came with pomegranate syrup on it, which we thought was intriguing. But then were perfectly happy not to spot it on our shawarmas when it did arrive.
8. Walked along a street with a brightly lit "DUBLIN" sign and yellow fairy lights shaped into moon crescents with stars at the tips, "Winter in Dublin" street and another with laser light projected on the Custom House building.
9. Came back, showered, finished potato chips and Dorothy Whipple's Because of the Lockwoods.
